Passive House Architect in DC | Contemporary Residential Design

An Architectural Process Built for Clarity (and Calm)

Before we talk about buildings, we start with experience.
Most people don’t remember floor plans—they remember how a place made them feel.
Working with Plan H means you’re never asked to make decisions in the abstract. We make complex choices clear, visual, and grounded in your priorities—before they become costly or stressful.

From the first design meeting, your home takes shape in real time.
Rather than relying on assumptions or flat drawings, we make the future space tangible early—so morning light, quiet, gathering, retreat, and long-term performance are understood before construction begins.

Throughout the design phases, we use detailed 3D perspectives, Passive House energy modeling, and VR walkthroughs to support confident decisions.
These tools are not the point. Clarity is. They exist to reduce uncertainty, align expectations, and protect the lived experience you’re investing in—comfort, health, quiet, and ease.

If you’re early—and not ready to talk budgets or square footage—start with reflection.
Our short quizzes reduce decision fatigue and clarify what matters most before design begins.

What We Do Differently

1. We start with experience, not assumptions
You don’t need to “imagine” how a space might feel. We translate your patterns—morning light, quiet, gathering, retreat—into spatial decisions you can see and evaluate early.

2. We embed Passive House thinking from the beginning
Sustainability is not the goal—it’s the baseline.
Comfort, health, and long-term performance are integrated early so the architecture stays coherent, calm, and durable.

3. We reduce construction friction with unusually clear documentation
Our detailed models clarify design intent for contractors and consultants—reducing misinterpretation, site friction, and costly drift between design and reality.

4. We protect Design Intent—so the home stays true
Design Intent is the shared framework for proportion, material honesty, detail, and atmosphere. Defined early and revisited often, it keeps the work coherent—even as constraints evolve.

Process Overview

We follow the professional architectural phases used across the industry, but your experience is organized into five chapters for clarity and simplicity.

1. Design
We establish goals, constraints, comfort priorities, and Design Intent—then refine the concept through schematic design and design development. Decisions are tested visually and technically, so alignment happens before stakes rise.

2. Preparation for Construction
We translate the approved design into construction documents for permitting and pricing. Performance, consultant coordination, and constructability are resolved so construction begins with clarity and confidence.

3. Client, Architect, Contractor Team
Once a contractor is engaged, we define roles, responsibilities, and communication protocols—so decisions stay clean, expectations stay shared, and the project moves without unnecessary friction.

4. Construction Administration
We stay actively involved through site visits, submittal reviews, and ongoing coordination. Our role is to protect Design Intent, resolve issues early, and support a smooth, well-executed build.

5. Furnishing & Moving In
As construction concludes, we support final adjustments and the transition into the home. The focus is continuity—so what you live matches what we intended from the beginning.
