Passive House and contemporary residential architecture for homeowners in the DC area—designed for lasting comfort, clean indoor air, and low energy use.
Passive House Architecture Services in Washington DC
Plan H is a Washington DC–based architecture studio focused on high-performance residential projects—renovations, additions, and new homes.
Since 2019, our work has centered on houses that are architecturally deliberate and technically rigorous, where comfort, durability, and spatial quality are developed together.
We primarily work in Washington DC, Northern Virginia, and Maryland. Select projects outside the region are considered when site, scope, and intent align.
Passive House is not an add-on. It informs how we approach site planning, massing, enclosure design, window placement, and ventilation strategy from the beginning.
By carefully controlling air, moisture, heat, and solar gain, we design homes that maintain stable temperatures, reduce noise, and support consistently high indoor air quality across seasons.
Our projects integrate architecture, interior architecture, and interior design as a continuous process.
Assemblies, spatial organization, and material decisions develop together—so performance reinforces architectural expression rather than constraining it.
The result is a home that feels calm, robust, and intentional—technically and experientially.
Architectural Services & Project Scope
Services are tailored to scope. Most projects include architectural design, interiors, and construction-phase support. Passive House modeling is included when aligned with project goals.
Overview: Site Planning, Architecture, Interior Architecture, Interior Design
Project Types: Renovations, Major Remodels, Additions, New Construction
Typical Scope of Services (varies by project)
- Feasibility studies and existing-conditions analysis
- Program development and budget alignment
- Concept design and schematic design
- Design development and coordination
- Passive House and building-performance strategy (as applicable)
- Construction documents and permitting support
- Contractor selection and bidding assistance
- Construction administration and site observation
- Cost review and quality control checkpoints
- Project closeout and move-in continuity
Architecture, interior architecture, and interior design are treated as one continuous composition. We design permanent building elements, integrated components, and selected furnishings so performance, spatial quality, and material honesty develop coherently—without fragmentation.
Not sure what level of performance is right for you?
Start with clarity, not jargon. The Comfort Quiz helps you name the indoor environment you want—so you can choose an approach that fits.
And if you’re still defining what you’re drawn to—how you live with light, nature, imperfection, and refuge—take the Architectural Archetype Quiz.
It’s the condensed version of the questions we ask at the beginning of every project.
Good architecture begins with listening. This is simply a first conversation.
Whether you’re exploring options or ready to move forward:
What is a Project Clarity Start?
A structured first engagement designed to reduce uncertainty. We clarify goals, constraints, comfort priorities, and decision pathways—so you leave with a grounded understanding of scope, process, and next steps.
